Why Irrigate Your Landscape?
Your home is more than just your castle. It is an investment. In fact, despite current economic situations, real estate remains one of the safest investments that you can make. Making improvements to your property not only makes it more of a home, but improves it from an investment standpoint, as well.
One of the most rewarding improvements, both functionally and financially, is landscaping. However, it is also one of the hardest improvements to maintain. As such, planning for the long term care of your landscape with an adequate irrigation system is a crucial component of the success of your landscaping project. Will you even need an irrigation system? If so, when should it enter into your plan? These are things you need to consider as part of the planning stage of your landscaping project.
A really well done landscape is a long term project that requires a large commitment of time, as well as the initial financial investment. The best landscapes are established in phases over the course of several years. As larger, permanent feature come to maturity, smaller temporary ornamentals are phased out. Of course, there is the constant aspects of weeding, trimming, fertilizing, etcetera to consider as well. None of this is more time consuming than the need to water regularly and thoroughly.
Chances are, unless you are retired or hire someone to maintain your lawn and garden, you simply are not going to have the time to put into maintaining your landscape investment properly. Though manual watering is the most conservative and effective means of water distribution, it simply requires a great deal of time on the part of the owner. This is especially true of larger landscapes.
Therefore, it is important before you ever set shovel to dirt, that you evaluate your ability, realistically, to keep up with your project. Overestimating your ability to do so can cost you a lot further down the line. Even if you have doubts, it is much better to play it safe by installing an irrigation system at the onset of the project.
The reason for having a system installed prior to beginning the project is simple. It is infinitely easier to install irrigation before installation of the landscape than it is to go back after the fact. If you take the time (and invest the money) in establishing a stunning landscape, it will be devastating to realize too late that you really need an irrigation system. Irrigation systems require a fair amount of trenching, and having one installed after the fact will severely mar your landscape project.
The simple truth is, you are much more likely to regret not having an irrigation system in place and needing one, than you are to regret having one and not needing it. Since your landscape project is an investment into your home, consider your irrigation system as the insurance helping to protect that investment. Of course, the irrigation system itself also adds to the value of your property. As such, there really are very few situations in which an irrigation system doesn’t pay off in the long run.
